Researchers have now found that earwax can say a lot about a person’s health. The principle function of this earwax also called cerumen is to keep bacteria and dirt at bay. Let us know about some things that the ear wax can tell about a person’s health.
• Watery with a greenish tint
If your ear wax resembles this, it means that you are either sweating or it could signal an infection in case the wax is greenish or dark yellow
• Dry or sticky wax
This depends on genes. People from Europe or Africa have sticky or wet wax whereas those from Asia have dry ear wax. This can also conferred to be a genetic adaptation to climatic conditions in these regions
• Strong smelling ear wax
This usually refers to damage or infection in the middle part of the ear. It is usually due to a condition called chronic otitis media. It will usually have additional symptoms which will warrant a visit to the doctor such as loss of balance, ringing sensation in the ears and blocked ears.
• Leaky ear wax
an abnormal skin structure called cholesteatoma sometimes causes fluid to pool up and leak out from the ears. It is also sometimes associated with pressure and pain in the ears.
• No ear wax
This is mostly due to a rare condition called keratitis obturans. In this case there is a build up of wax inside the ear. It will also be accompanied by symptoms like fullness or pain in the ears.
• Flaky war wax
Flaky ear wax is quite common when people get old. So it is not a case of alarm. Glands in the ear dry out when people become old.
