Uric acid crystals forming inside joints cause gout pain. Gout arthritis is the most painful type of arthritis. With high purines (high protein-foods) in diet, gout risk is high. This is because purines are converted into uric acid that in excess could precipitate gout in patient at risk. These 6 drinks put your gout at risk:
Beer has large amounts of purines. 12-ounce of beer consumed daily is 1.5 times more likely to cause gout than those who do not consume alcohol, suggests a research. High alcohol and brewer’s yeast in beer triggers gout in those who are prone to it.
Kidneys excrete alcohol instead of uric acid when one consumes alcohol. This increases uric acid amount in blood that provokes gout attack in blood. Therefore, any alcoholic beverage is bad for those who tend to have gout.
3. Orange juice
Sugar-sweetened juices are likely to increase gout including the naturally sweetened ones like orange juice. High fructose in fruit juice may be linked to high gout as per studies from last 10 years. So having fruit juice is as risky as drinking a sugary soft drink.
4. Soft drinks
Research proves increased gout risk from consuming sugar-sweetened drinks. Intake of one sugar-sweetened drink per day could double a woman’s risk of developing gout compared with women who had less than one sugar-sweetened drink per month. Fruit juices are also associated with high risk of gout while diet soda is not.
Some studies show that caffeine consumption protects from gout as the chemical composition of caffeine is similar to that of gout medication. But others suggest increased risk with increased caffeine consumption (doubled intake related to 80% of increase in risk as per one study). So just remember to avoid just binge of caffeine intake as that could bring a gout attack.
6. Energy drinks
Consuming energy drinks is the same as going on a caffeine binge. Being very high in sugar, it actually doubles your risk (as majority of these drinks are sweetened with high fructose).
High uric acid doesn’t bring gout pain to everyone but however American diet is having increased uric acid these days. Hence, beware of what you eat and drink.
