Wine glasses are those glasses used to taste and drink wine. Based on their shape, there are two types of wine glasses available. Stemware type and stemless type glasses. Generally for drinking wine stemware type glasses are used. By stemware type, it means they have a base or leg on which they sit, a stem above the base for holding it comfortably and a bowl that rests on the stem to fill in and carry the wine.
Earlier wine glasses were made from lead glass. After it was discovered that health problems are associated with the use of lead vessels, the use of lead glass stopped. Lead-free glasses were then used for drinking wines. Colored wine glasses are not generally produced as they would dull the beauty of the color of wine.
Wine glasses are also designed in a shape specifically for different types of wines. Wine glasses for white wines are different from wine gasses for red wine. These two types are physically different from those used for sparkling wines.
Wine glass Material
Based on the composition, wine glass can be classified into two-glasses made out of glass and glasses made out of crystal. Both these glasses, have fundamental unit as glass. But in crystal type, additional to the glass, metal oxides or metal carbonates are also incorporated. The metal oxides or metal carbonates are incorporated in the glass for increasing the density of glass and for the purpose of diffracting light.
Classification of Wine Glasses according to Wine Type
There is no scientific basis to the idea that wine glasses should be selected according to the type of wine. There are persons arguing in favor of that idea and many disagreeing with it. However, we are here listing some wine glass types that are thought to be suitable for drinking different types of wines.
Red Wine glasses
For red wines, its better to use large glasses. Glasses with bowls that are sightly wider, rounder and that have larger openings are preferred for red wines. It’s how the manufacturers of wine glasses make glasses for red wines. The shape of glass is made broader and rounder to increase the oxidation rate of wine. Oxidation means the process of coming in contact with air. With the red wine coming in contact with air, the complex flavor becomes more smoothed out, and the result is a more tasty wine.
White wine glasses
There are many types of white wines available. The oxidation requirements of each of them for their best tastes are different. Thus white wine glasses come in different shapes and sizes. Some are with broad bowls and some are narrow bowled.
Sparkling Wine Glasses
The sparkling wine glasses are typically vertical in fashion. They are narrower openings than normal wine glasses. They do have stems, and their stems are long. The openings are narrowed to contain the carbonation(the bubbling of wine) inside the glass. The vertical glasses also help to show case the visual beauty of the wine.
Rose Wine glasses
For Rose wines, glasses are selected based on age of wine. For younger wines, glasses with flared lips are preferred, and for mature wines, glasses that are rounded at the bottom with less taper are preferred. Flared lips are used to direct the wine from the glass to the sweetness sensitive location of taste buds. Glasses for mature wines nearly resembles the red wine glasses. They differ only in the amount of taper provided.
These are containers in the form of mugs. These are used for drinking local wines made in Switzerland like Merlot.
