Ear infections are of two types. Acute otitis media (AOM) is the inflammation behind the tympanic membrane and it is an infection in the middle of the ear. This infection usually develops from a flu or cold and are common in children. Whereas, Otitis Media with Effusion (OME) is the building up of fluid in one or both middle ears. When it gets severe, the fluid gets sticky and is called ‘glue ear’. It is not painful, but the infection can last for weeks or months. Symptoms are a feeling of stuffiness in the ears, like the feeling of being under water.
Bacteria are the main causes of AOM and are visible in 60% of ear infections:
– Streptococcus pneumoniae causes 50%-80% cases.
– Haemophilus influenzae is responsible for 20%-30% infections.
– Moraxella catarrhalis is responsible for 10%-15% cases.
Viruses in the middle ear fluid is present in 40% of ear infections in children.
– Respiratory syncytial virus is responsible for upper and lower respiratory infections.
– Rhinovirus is found in 1%-8% of otitis media cases.
